Why Do I See Negative Numbers for iTunes Track Pre-Orders?

The iTunes track pre-order generally represents the "instant grat" tracks that are made available with an albums pre-order.

As with all pre-orders on iTunes, when the items officially go on sale, all pre-orders are reversed (negated) in the iTunes accounting system and applied as a "sale" on the "On sale" date.

This causes a dramatic drop in pre-orders as all those fulfilled prior to the on sale date are shown as credited tracks.
